  1. A Childrens Worker Safety Check is a requirement under the Children’s Act 2014 . In reality it is a series of checks in order to ensure a safe and competent Children’s care workforce.
  2. These checks are designed to identify individuals who may pose a risk to children and accordingly prevent them from being employed in a position that requires them to support, or provide care, to children.

All paid new and existing employees and contractors (including those who are self-employed) who work with children in state-funded organisations in roles that involve regular or overnight contact with children.

Safety checking applies to those who work with children in regulated health services:

  1. Services provided at a public hospital.
  2. Services provided at a publicly-funded medical practice or facility, including blood and cancer centres, treatment centres, outreach clinics, and mental health services.
  3. Services provided through medical practices belonging to primary health organisations (PHOs).
  4. Services provided by health practitioners.
  5. Well Child / Tamariki Ora services (eg, Plunket).
  6. Home-based disability support services.
  7. Residential disability support services.
  8. Ambulance services.
  9. Maternity services, including lead maternity carers and midwives.

The regulations/laws also apply to people doing unpaid work with children as part of an educational or vocational training course (eg, trainees or students).

  1. You will need to complete a Children’s Worker Safety Check in the event that you are a paid employee or contractor who works with children up to 17 years of age for any type of state funded organisation in New Zealand
  2. The requirement for Children’s Worker checks applies to trainees and students completing unpaid work with children as part of their vocational training or education.

Children’s Worker Safety Checks are valid for 3 years from the date of issue.

New Zealand legislation relating to Children’s Worker Safety Checks require that copies of an individual’s ID be certified as part of your application.

Following the completion of a Safety Check each applicant will be provided with a report regarding the outcome of their check. The results of the Children's Worker Safety Check is either a clearance to work with children for a three year period, or a decline notice.

    • Details of any convictions, including the location of the particular Court, date of any offence and any sentence imposed.
  1. The New Zealand Children’s Worker Safety Checks are valid for a maximum of a three year period from the date of issue.
  2. When you order a check from The 3rd Degree, we will send you a reminder to renew the check before it expires.

In accordance with the intent of the Children's Act 2014 You will need to confirm your identity by providing scanned, Certified Copies of your identity documents.
